Medic alert jewelry saved my life last summer when I was in a car accident on a road trip. I was traveling in a car with a group of my friends when a tractor-trailer cut us off. Swerving to avoid hitting the rig my girlfriend inadvertently ripped the wheel too hard causing us to flip multiple times. The paramedics and fire truck arrived quickly but I was already unconscious so I couldn't warn them of all the medicines I'm allergic to. Thankfully the quick thinking medics checked my person for my alert bracelet before treating me, if they hadn't I would most likely be dead or in a coma right now.
I remember when my mom first got me the medic alert jewelry, I told her it was stupid because I'm not a big fan of men wearing jewelry but she insisted saying that one day it might be needed and I wouldn't think it was so silly after that. How right she was! When I think back about how I scoffed at the idea that anything would ever happen to me, how naïve I was. Now I've made it my own little personal mission to make sure that anyone I know with an allergy or medical condition has one.
I understand that some guys think its not cool and they don't want to appear weak or sickly by wearing a medical alert necklace or bracelet but really, how weak will you appear if you are in a casket because some well meaning doctor administered a lethal drug to you? Recently we even got my grandma some medical alert jewelry and hers is connected to a 24-hour monitoring service so that if anything happens to her, the paramedics will be dispatched immediately. After my little scare, it really helps me to know that such a simple little piece of jewelry is there to help protect me and my family.
