Last June my youngest son was diagnosed with a severe allergy to nuts and I instantly began doing research to see how I could help protect him. My biggest fear is always that once he starts daycare or school I won't be there around the clock to monitor everything he does. Since only a small trace of peanuts could put him into a coma I wanted to make sure that everyone he came into contact with understood his allergies and how to help him if he had an attack. The one item I have found to be the most useful with this issue is the medic alert tags.

Not only does my son wear a medical id bracelet, I have tags on his backpack, lunchbag and shoelaces. I know it may seem a little over the top, but no matter where my son is or what he is doing I want to know that I am doing my best to ensure his safety, especially until he is old enough to really understand his allergy and takes steps to protect himself. Medic alert tags can be found online for free or you can purchase decorative jewelry with engraved information on them. I print out the online medical alert tags to place on his clothing and got the bracelet from a medical supply store.

Medic id tags are so inexpensive and yet have the capability of being priceless. It seems unthinkable to me that anyone with a condition or allergy requiring specific medical care would not protect themselves with an id tag. If you are a very private person and feel that wearing a medic tag will violate that privacy by allowing others to see it, I recommend at the very least carrying a medical id card in your wallet so that if you are ever in a situation where your life is at risk, paramedics and doctors will be able to safely treat you.
